We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now. And so we ve come to cash this check, a check that will give upon you demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great volts of opportunity of this Nation. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check a check which has come back marked вЂњInsufficient fundsвЂќ. It is obvious that America has defaulted on this promissory note in as far as her citizens of color are concerned. This note was the promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. In a sense we have come to our Nations capital to cash a check. So we come here today, to dramatize a shameful condition.

But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free one hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination one hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity one hundred years later, the Negro is still languished in the corners of American society and finds himself in exile in his own land.

It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. Five score years ago, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. And that was when he gave his most famous speech: вЂњI am happy to join with you today and what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation. On Aughe marched into the Lincoln Memorial with 250,000 people following him. When Martin was a teenager he wrote speeches and organized marches for black rights.

Once when he was playing baseball, his brother swung the bat slipped and hit him in the head. Twice when he was riding his bike he got hit by cars. When he was five, he fell off the stairs and 20 feet and landed on his head.

When Martin was little he used to sing in his father s church in front of hundreds of people. He also had an older sister Christine, and a younger brother, Alfred Daniel. Martin Luther s mother s name was Alberta King. His Father, Martin Luther King was minister of the Ebenezer Baptist Church. was born in Atlanta, Georgia in January 1929.
